Renovated Lester Institute of Technical Education
In the heart of Shanghai's northern waterfront, a century-old building, the Lester Institute of Technical Education, stands tall. After a year of meticulous renovation, this historic building has been transformed into the Shanghai Innovation and Creative Design Research Institute (DIIS). The goal is to create a world-class design-driven innovation transformation engine, continue the cultural heritage, and promote urban renewal. The project has been awarded the "RICS 2023 Urban Renewal Project".
Lester Institute before renovation
Lester Institute after renovation
The architectural facade retains a fusion of English Gothic Revival Style and Art Deco, with a strong emphasis on vertical lines and a refined and powerful appearance. The facade uses commonly used materials in Shanghai's modern architecture, such as natural granite, Taishan bricks, and cut fake stones, creating a dignified and warm architectural color.
"The Institute especially promotes cross-disciplinary innovation
We hope to integrate design technology and business
Mix different dimensions of knowledge"
- Zhang Jie, Director of Strategic Development, Shanghai Innovation and Creative Design Research Institute
The newly renovated Lester Institute is an experimental field for cross-disciplinary innovation. It will introduce different carriers to participate in deep interactions and work with different enterprises to create an innovative ecosystem.
